Enjoying My Meals

How are your meals different than the meals I can buy in the grocery store?

While the bistroMD entrée trays may look similar to those generic grocery meals, thats where the similarities end! Some frozen dinners are loaded with fat, sodium, and calories. Packaging claims may also be misleading. Its not always clear what makes products qualify to be labeled natural or organic.

On the other hand, the bistroMD program has been scientifically balanced for weight loss and all 150+ entrée are certified by the USDA. There is no added MSG, Trans Fat, or Aspartame in our entrées. We are committed to serving the same quality food that we eat at our own tables. Additionally, there is significantly more protein present in bistroMD meals, and the portion sizes are larger than the standard store-bought frozen meal. At bistroMD we are fighting the idea that diet food is bland and un-filling with large servings of delicious chef-prepared entrées.

How many portions are your meals?

Even though it may seem like a lot of food, each entrée is one portion for a single person. We dislike the idea of having to starve or eat less in order to lose weight. Instead of suffering through hunger, we offer large portions to keep you satisfied until your next meal.

We also offer tasty protein-based snacks to help satisfy the munchies! 😊

How are my meals packaged?

We package our meals in an environmentally friendly insulation and use dry ice to keep them cold during shipping.

The individual meals are served in CPET plastic trays and sealed with a light plastic cover to ensure freshness. Our trays are microwave and oven-safe (up to 400F) and don’t release BPA when heated. Both the tray and plastic cover can be directly recycled, as well as the cardboard sleeve with other paper products.

You can read more about how to recycle all of our packaging here.

Can I customize my meals?

While we don’t offer the option to change specific ingredients in our entrees, such as swapping out different side dishes, you can customize your weekly menu. You can easily swap or substitute meals and update your preferences to only receive meals with your approved foods.

For additional support in customizing your menu, please contact our customer service team to assist you further.

Do you have vegetarian or vegan meals?

Vegetarian diets can take many forms and follow many definitions. At bistroMD, we offer a selection of plant-based meals, as well as seafood/pescatarian options, and some meatless meals that contain dairy. To remove specific ingredients from your program, such as chicken, pork, and beef, please sign up with our standard program, and then contact customer service so we can accommodate your request before your meals are shipped.

We do offer a full vegan program, click here to learn more about it!

Our chefs are working on new entrees to add additional variety to our program, so keep informed by joining the newsletter for updates and new meals when they are added to the menu!

How do I peel off the plastic film?

This depends on how you heat your meals.

If you are cooking in the microwave, leave the plastic on until after its cooked, and then carefully peel back a corner or puncture the film while watching out for any trapped steam.

If you are cooking in the oven, remove the film before you start heating the meal. Our CPET trays are oven safe to 400°F and leech no harmful chemicals or plastic, but the plastic film wont do well in the oven!

How to heat your meals

Heat your meals directly from the freezer or after being thawed in the fridge within 48 hours.

To heat in a microwave:

1. Remove the tray from the outer cardboard sleeve. Do not remove or puncture the clear film.
2. Follow the heating instructions and time printed on the outer sleeve.
3. Let stand covered for 1 minute before serving.

To heat in a toaster or convection oven:

1. Preheat the oven to 325°F (do not exceed 400°F).
2. Remove the plastic film from the tray.
3. Place all entrée contents into an oven-safe baking dish or put a pan under the plastic tray. Don’t worry, our CPET trays are oven safe to 400°F and do not release any harmful chemicals or plastic! (Read more about how your meals are packaged here.)
4. Heating times can vary based on many factors, although we recommend heating until the internal temperature is at least 165°F.
5. Remove from oven and allow to sit for 1-2 minutes.

For both heating methods, please handle the heated meal with caution as the meal and packaging will be hot.

Where can I find ingredients and nutritional info for my meals?

If you're viewing online, simply click on the meal image to learn more about the dish and expand the "Nutrition Facts" and "All Ingredients" tabs for more information. Additionally, all nutritional information and ingredients are listed on the cardboard sleeve around the meal.

How long will my meals last?

All of our meals are prepared with fresh ingredients and then flash-frozen to preserve their freshness and quality—just as if our chefs were hand-preparing the meals in your own kitchen! This freezing process also naturally extends the shelf-life of each meal to up to one year when kept continuously frozen. Once thawed, you can enjoy them within a 4-day window, much like other food leftovers.
