Intro: The Fundamentals of Weight Loss

Welcome to The Fundamentals of Weight Loss course! 

We’re excited to have you with us as founding physician Dr. Caroline Cederquist and bistroRD Nicole Hartwick introduce us to their combined decades-worth of experience. They’ll also share evidence-based weight loss strategies and how you can apply them to your own journey.

Dr. Cederquist: Are you frustrated with not being able to lose weight and keep it off? 

Nicole: Maybe you've tried just about everything to lose weight and still feel stuck.

Dr. Cederquist: Well, you're not alone, and we're in this together! I'm Dr. Caroline Cederquist, co-founder of bistroMD. 

Nicole: And hi, I'm Nicole Hartwick, one of the registered dietitians with bistroMD. And we're so excited to have you join us in this virtual course to help guide you along your wellness journey. 

Dr. Cederquist: Our main goal for this course is to share our combined decades of real-life experiences with patients in a clinical setting with you. I started out as a family physician and after years of writing prescription after prescription of medications for one patient, it really hit me that I wasn't doing what I wanted to do as a physician. 

Dr. Cederquist: I wanted to really help my patients become healthier and not just treat medical conditions with medicine and then need more prescriptions to deal with the side effects of the medications. I shared with my patients that if they were able to successfully make some lifestyle changes and lose weight, they might not need as many or any of the medications they were on.

Dr. Cederquist: And you know what? Almost all of the patients I shared this with told me they wanted to lose weight. They didn't want to hold the extra pounds on the medical issues that they caused, but they often shared that they had tried to lose weight again and again, that it didn't work or that they had just given up, or worse, that they were actively trying to lose weight and instead were gaining weight.

Dr. Cederquist: So instead, I began writing what I call dietary prescriptions in place of prescribing medications. This became so effective for my patients, I decided to open my own practice and focus on my mission and passion of helping people achieve life-transforming wellness.

Nicole: Yes, and since I've joined Dr. Cederquist’s practice as a registered dietitian, we have been working together to help thousands of people lose and maintain their weight.

Dr. Cederquist: And now we've created this online course to help you!

Nicole: That's right! In this course, we'll highlight the science of weight loss and provide you with actionable tips you can lean on during your wellness journey.

Dr. Cederquist: Yes! Whether you are new to bistroMD or have been a member for many years, we want to support, encourage, and celebrate you as you work towards your goals and give you the tools you need to achieve those goals.

Nicole: Absolutely. So let's dive into the four main goals of this course. Number one, we want to help you lose weight and maintain your weight loss lifelong.

Dr. Cederquist: Second, we want to help you understand the metabolic challenges that can impact your weight loss progress and how to overcome them. 

Nicole: Thirdly, we want to address the nutritional foundation of bistroMD and how that supports you throughout your weight loss journey.

Dr. Cederquist: And fourth, we honor that weight management can be complex. Just because you may not be at the place you want to be, it doesn't mean you did anything wrong. All that means is that what you're doing now is just not working for you. And we want to get to what works for you. 

Nicole: Absolutely. There is not a one size fits all approach. So if something feels like it's not a good fit for you personally, pass on it. The key to success is to identify what works for you and what doesn't work for you. The recommendations you will get from us are based on science and years of working with patients in a private practice. You will discover that it's all about trial and error and trial and success.

Dr. Cederquist: Each session, we will dive into key topics to help you optimize your diet for weight loss and create healthy habits for lasting results. But first, we'll be diving into one of the root causes of why you may have had such difficulty losing weight in the past.
